Making the right call on a players future can be the difference between championships or misery. Jordan Addison presents a case for fantasy managers to stay patient and cautious with. Within this article we lay out the reasoning for holding Addison rather than buying or selling.

Addison’s Concerns: Size, Quarterback Change, and Performance Metrics

At the heart of the concerns surrounding Addison is his relatively small stature for the wide receiver position. Weighing in at 173 pounds, Addison’s small frame raises durability and performance consistency concerns in the physical NFL. This aspect alone makes for a cautious approach in assessing his future fantasy value.

Compounding the situation is the Vikings’ recent quarterback shift to JJ McCarthy, a move that introduces uncertainty into Addison’s future production. McCarthy, despite being picked 10th overall in the 2024 NFL draft, comes with his own set of concerns which we highlight here. These concerns could affect Addison’s future value when the QB carousel in Minnesota begins as we believe it will.

Furthermore, Addison’s Relative Athletic Score (RAS) of 5.94 underscores the performance concerns. In a league where athletic prowess can significantly impact a player’s ability to create separation and make plays, such a low score could be indicative of future struggles.

Addison’s Rookie Season: A Mirage?

Jordan Addison’s first season in the NFL was undeniably impressive, boasting 911 yards and 10 touchdowns. However, the analytical lens suggests that his success may have been partially inflated by the presence of Justin Jefferson and Kirk Cousins. Jefferson, a focal point for defenses, was being highlighted by defenses which removed the spotlight from Addison. Combine this with the competent quarterbacking of Cousins, Addison’s rookie stats could be seen as more situational than purely talent.

The Future with JJ McCarthy

The Vikings hope the selection of JJ McCarthy in the draft signals a possible new era for them. Although, given how we are low on McCarthy, this could have a significant negative impact on Addison’s production. Given McCarthy’s unproven nature and the areas of concern already outlined, there’s a significant risk that Addison might not replicate his rookie performance.

The Verdict: Hold

Given the blend of concerns, the strategy for fantasy managers is to hold Addison cautiously. All reasons stemming from Addison’s physical build, the quarterback transition, and the poor relative athletic scoring. Monitoring Addison’s game-by-game production becomes vital, especially early in 2024. In the event of a noticeable decline, we will be changing Addison to a sell. Although, he has shown enough that there is a hope that none of these reasons may negatively impact him. Until then, hold and watch him under a close lens.
